A new interactive web based resource will allow the public to see up to date information from the Guernsey Sites and Monuments Record on historical sites situated within the Bailiwick.

The Sites and Monuments Record aims to provide an individual record for all known historic sites within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The records include buildings, fortifications, find spots, monuments, earthworks, street furniture, landscape features, buried sites and shipwrecks. The record also includes many sites that have unfortunately been destroyed and are known only from old historic records. The new website will allow easy access for current and future generations to find out about the location of the Bailiwick’s historical past.

The digital Map has a point for each record and when a point is selected a summary of information is available. In addition, a hotlink is provided for number of major sites, offering a more detailed description along with a photograph of the site. This is an ongoing project and so the website, which was produced by Digimap Ltd, will be updated periodically.

States Archaeologist, Dr Philip de Jersey said: ‘The online Sites and Monuments Record is the culmination of many years of hard work behind the scenes. I am delighted that this valuable resource is now available to anybody interested in the archaeology and history of the Bailiwick.’
