Extra tax forms sent by mistake
Some taxpayers may receive an extra form when 2009 Income Tax returns are delivered over the next few days.
The returns are supplied to the Income Tax Office by a contracted company from outside the States. It appears that for a small number of people, more than one return may have been printed by mistake.
Director of Income Tax, Rob Gray, said that it would not be possible to hunt out all the duplicate forms before they are sent out.
‘If anyone does receive more than one return, I apologise in advance,’ said Mr Gray. ‘Taxpayers are only expected to complete one return for their personal tax affairs and any duplicates can be discarded.
‘I can assure people that this is not an attempt to increase the tax take by the back door!
‘We issue tens of thousands of returns to individuals each year and it is simply not cost effective to have staff trawl through the returns hoping to spot the duplicates before they are issued.’
People can also complete their tax return online through www.gov.gg. Since the system was introduced in 2008, some 4,000 people have switched to an electronic return.
‘Improvements are being made, and will continue to be made, to this system,’ said Mr Gray.
‘The ultimate intention is to make it substantially easier, and more convenient, to file online than completing the paper return.’
